VMware vCenter Converter Standalone slow P2V

I've been doing quite a few P2Vs recently and due to one server being located on the DMZ and us not wanted to open up too many ports, I had to install the Converter Standalone server application onto the actual server that was to be P2V'd. After starting the P2V, I noticed the transfer rate was incredibly slow (2-3 MB/s). Immediately, I knew it was an issue with the SSL encryption settings for the converter worker agent. However, I decided to blog it down in case I forget in the future (this is a set it and forget it setting).

Here is the fix:
  • Navigate to C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\ and open the converter-worker.xml file
  • Find the <useSsl></useSsl> tags which are located inside the <nfc></nfc> tags. Change the value from "true" to "false"
  • Restart the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Worker service and re-run the P2V job

After making this change, the P2V transfer rate increased to 40 MB/s.
